When starting this work, my hope was always to get the attention of elected officials so that domestic violence could get the attention it needs. I wanted to be able to provide victims & survivors with the tools necessary to turn their pain into power. This year at the 4th annual Women's Empowerment Brunch, From Pain to Power was presented with an official commendation from the office of @repglennivey for our work serving the residents of Maryland. It was truly a blessing to be able to see this come full circle, but the work is far from finished. With that being said, check out our next post for an exciting announcement! 💜

Today I had the opportunity to sit as a panelist at the Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Conference, hosted by The People’s Community Baptist Church where we honored collaboration and unity in raising awareness for a cause close to our hearts. It was truly inspiring to witness the unwavering commitment of the faith-based community in fostering healing for survivors 💜

It was such an honor to serve as the keynote speaker yesterday at Prince George’s County’s 10th Annual Purple Light Night hosted by the Sheriff’s Office to kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month 💜 as we move into the month of October, I encourage you to get active, get involved, & be the change #domesticviolenceawarenessmonth

Grateful for the opportunity to have been able to speak again this year at the City of Bowie’s Walk to End Domestic Violence. To be in a space where we’re able to come together & take a stand against domestic violence is evidence that we’ve come a long way, however, we still have so much work to do. Each one of us in this community has a role to play in putting an end to DV. Let’s continue to raise awareness, educate ourselves & others, provide safe spaces for victims & survivors, and hold abusers accountable. We can do this 💜#enddomesticviolence

Statistics show that 1 in 3 young people will experience abuse in a relationship. 33% of adolescents in the US are victims of sexual, physical, verbal, or emotional dating abuse. Violent behavior typically begins between 6th & 12th grade. Only 1/3 teens confide in someone about the abuse. This February, let us work together as a community to promote healthy relationships and empower young individuals to stand against abusive behavior. #TeenDatingViolenceAwarenessMonth #EndDatingViolence🧡

It is important that we shed light & share knowledge about domestic violence, intimate partner violence, and teen dating violence, not just in the month of October, but throughout the year. Yesterday evening I had the pleasure of speaking to some youth at First Baptist Church of Glenarden during their ‘Unashamed’ program. Statistics show that nearly 1 in 12 teens have experienced teen dating violence. By educating & empowering them from a young age, we can prevent them from going down the path of DV.

To affirm something is to strongly state it as a fact. I believe it’s important to close all of my speeches with powerful affirmations. Self love is the best love, & it teaches you what to require of others who try to love you. Once you love yourself, everything else falls into place 💜 Thank you to PG Parks & Recreation for having me as your guest speaker yesterday evening at your 10th Annual Teen Conference. It was such a pleasure. Our county is full of such wonderful & talented young people! I was blown away by the gifted poets & artists who performed last night!

I am so thankful for the love & support shared amongst the ladies who attended From Pain to Power’s 3rd Annual Women’s Empowerment Brunch today. The day was nothing short of amazing. I’m grateful for the stories shared, the bonds that were formed, & the journey of healing that we will now embark on together. I’d like to thank our County Executive, Angela Alsobrooks for her generous & continued support, @faith2felicity for allowing us to use their beautiful space, and everyone else who contributed to making this day special. 💜

Yesterday I had the honor & privilege of speaking & sharing my story at this year’s Mother Daughter Tea hosted by the Prince George’s County Department of Family Services. If you were to have asked me to speak publicly & share my story 2 year ago, I would’ve said no; I wasn’t ready. Yesterday, I stepped out of my comfort zone & felt a weight being lifted off of my shoulders. I found that my voice, my story, helps others share theirs too. In doing this, we bring awareness to the issue at hand, being domestic violence. We are able to help other women in similar situations get out as well. I am so grateful for this platform I was given & I vow to continue to be fully committed to doing whatever it takes to help as many women as I can. 💜 #breakthesilence #domesticviolencesurvivor

John Carr, Mayor Pro Tem & councilman Adrian Boafo, councilman Michael Esteve, Founder of Bruised Not Broken, Alicia Stukes, Ellis Booker of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, and a published author Tokeitha Wilson. It was such an honor & I hope to have impacted some lives today 💜
